Description

Here's some very early-stage work right off of the drawing table (or, more accurately, the dirty/scratched old board of unknown origin that I put over the end of my bed and use as a drawing table). It's the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. Gill-Man, stalking Kay Lawrence as she swims underwater.

As you can hopefully see, I only have a few things down at this point. There's the shape of Kay's figure and some very slight indication of action lines around her, standing in for the flow of water around her and the trail of bubbles from her mouth/nose. More concretely, I have the shape of the Creature done and have begun to work on the details of his body. He has a very complicated body with scaly skin and overlapping pieces resembling armor, and the bit that I've already done is LOADED with linework. My style is deliberately spare and cartoonish, making this a departure from my comfort zone, but it's an intentional one -- by drawing the Creature out of my usual style, it highlights the difference between it and the woman he's following. (There's a method to the madness!)

At lower right, I have some of the underwater features drawn in the foreground. The trick to drawing underwater scenes is that there's always a lot of background depth (no pun intended) necessary to convey the unusual characteristics of being underwater -- lots of random crap floating around, flora on the sea bed, fish, etc. The idea here is to draw some stuff in the foreground, partially overlapping the figures, and then to populate the layer behind them with more stuff to create the illusion of depth. There's an element of "feel" at play because the far layers will develop according to how the drawing looks tome when it's just the two figures and the foreground miscellany.
